There are a few surface scratch marks most noticeably to Volume 2. This is Stockdale's wonderful and celebrated illustrated edition the Second Edition after drawings made by Thomas Stothard. In Volume two there is an additional life of Daniel Defoe by Chalmers. A lovely clean tight set of this seminal work which would certainly add to any serious book collection and adorn the shelf they sat upon. He was involved in a series of violent storms at sea and was warned by the captain that he should not be a seafaring man. Ashamed to go home, Crusoe boarded another ship and returned from a successful trip to Africa.
Taking off again, Crusoe met with bad luck and was taken prisoner in Sallee.

Cooke, Near Fine. Three-volume complete set. Signed fine bindings by "Bayntun. Bath, England" and bound for the bookseller E. Dutton of New York. Brown full-leather bindings with ornate gilt decoration on both covers and spine and five raised gilt-edged bands and gilt lettering on red and brown morocco leather title labels on the spine. Marbled endpapers.
All page edges stained yellow.

All three volumes are in NEAR FINE condition with moderate wear to the leather joints but with no cracking and just light touches of wear at the top spine edges and a few corner tips. Nearly no surface wear to the leather boards and no bumping to the edges. All are tightly bound, straight and square with no cracking to the inner hinges. Nearly flawless interiors with bright, clean pages with no foxing, staining, or tears and just a few pages with tiny corner creases.
No former owner bookplates or signatures but there is a gift inscription on the blank reverse side of the front endpaper in Volume I.. Philadelphia: j B Lippincott, Limited to sets, this being hand numbered Rebound with three quarter leather binding and marbled paper covers and endpapers. Tipped in illustrations. Some wear to hinges, stains to covers and wear to edges.
